Martha Sullivan is a composer, music theorist, teacher, and performer. The majority of their music is for the human voice (Sullivan is a soprano) and includes award-winning solo, choral, and chamber music. They have earned recognition with awards from such organizations as the Dale Warland Singers, the Sorel Organization, and Chamber Music America; they have also been commissioned by numerous choral organizations and solo performers around the US, as well as in Japan, Scotland, and Switzerland. Their work is published by G. Schirmer, Laurendale, and See-A-Dot. Sullivan is also a scholar of music theory, semiotics, and gender; they completed their PhD at Rutgers in 2023. They have presented their work at many international conferences.
Sullivan has also taught composition, theory/musicianship, and voice at various schools, including most recently Columbia, Rutgers, and the Bard Conservatory’s Preparatory Division, where the students help Sullivan think through the meaning of music and what it adds to life.
